So, who is this "Judge" and why do they think they know so much about bats anyway? Well, it's not really a "who" so much as a "what".
The "Bat Judge" is a completely custom 120 lb., 3 ft. tall and 5' long mechanical Frankenstein of swinging fury which produces the most accurate and repeatable bat swing possible. Its sole purpose of existence is to ensure bats are reliably tested for meaningful statistics at consistent swing speeds and contact locations. It does not "feel" a bat is good, or not. It does not "prefer" a sound, or weight distribution. It just wants to show you how each bat truly performs at its main purpose of transferring energy into a ball to make it move at multiple contact points across the face of the bat.
In a word "POP". Everyone is trying to determine how much "pop" a bat has, which can be defined as how well a particular bat delivers energy to a ball from a given swing. We have done our fair share of research on bats over the years, looking for reliable information on basic bat performance. We just wanted to know how one bat actually performed compared to the others. What we tended to find was generally well intentioned, but ultimately unhelpful opinions of how things "feel". Completely unrepeatable and unrelatable methods were being used to try and determine which bat performs better. We decided there must be a better way to get REAL data on bats and provide accurate, repeatable and actually useful data to others so they can make more informed decisions on which bat is best for them.
The concept seemed simple enough. Then reality set in as the engineering began. There was a lot more thought, insight, foresight and design that had to go into the Bat Judge than you'd think. In order to produce the reliable data needed to deliver truly useful information across many, many swings, the Bat Judge needed to be built very robustly. It also needed an eye towards the accurate reproduction of typical swing elements. So, after a few different designs, many revisions to the final design, a lot of wasted pieces of steel and more than a little bit of blood and tears, the Bat Judge was finally born!
We have a long list of bats we want to test and a ton of direct comparisons we'd like to make. What we may not know is what is burning on your mind right now. What would you like to see tested? Or, is there a specific element of a bat you're curious about that we may be able to help with? Contact us and let us know!
"We" are a father and two sons who have competed at many levels of competitive baseball. We have researched and asked and failed many times to find reliable information on baseball equipment. Specifically, baseball bats. With today's prices for new bats soaring ever higher, these are no longer trivial decisions! We have been through some very poor bats and some really great ones. It would have been amazing to have truly reliable information and insight on what the "right" bat was for us at certain ages/body sizes. We are trying hard to bring that to you now.
We are working hard to stay independent and are not taking funds from any bat manufacturer to push product. They may advertise like they would anywhere else, but we are not directly accepting any endorsements from them to keep our reviews honest and accurate.
We're all working hard either to make the next level ourselves, or to help our kids fulfill their dreams. You'll get real-world advice from those that have come before you. Little League (Pony, Babe Ruth, etc.) to travel ball, to High School and beyond. We'll even touch on injuries, progress, setbacks and what to look for and avoid at each level of the progression towards the bigs.
Our fans are a real part of our team. Send us a message to cheer us on, or ask us a question about anything you see here. Or, if you are just curious what our opinion is on the best bat for you, or your child's physical dimensions/strengths/opportunities please ask. We look forward to hearing from you, and we will get back to you soon.
